washington's homicide rate dropped by 18.5%. they recorded the lowest number there and 50 years. what is more, the population in washington is assuming. it has exceeded the population in baltimore, creating a significant difference in the homicide rates. baltimore's rate is more than two times higher. there are other numbers showing overall crime in 2012 down about 5%. reporting live, wbal tv-11 news. >> thank you. now to the very first baby born in our area this new year. it was a boy. it happened at 12:20 this morning, and rob roblin has the story. >> for one young couple, they will never forget 2013.

meet scott michael. 7 town, 6 ounce baby boy was born at 12:26 this morning, making him the first baby of 2013 and baltimore area. >> [indiscernible] >> what time was he born? >> [indiscernible] >> he seems happy sometimes. how are you feeling? >> [indiscernible] >> escalon night? >> yes. >> scott's mom came to the hospital on sunday. >> i had my baby shower. about two hours later, i had to go to the hospital because my water broke. it ruptured. they kept me. >> when was that? >> the 30th. >> yesterday evening, things started getting exciting.
